President's Message

As we embark on the 2020-2021 Northeastern Pennsylvania HFMA Chapter year, we do so in unchartered territory. The events over the past several months have impacted everyone’s personal and professional life in some ways. On behalf of our chapter, we would like to extend condolences to all those who have lost loved ones to the COVID-19 pandemic. We keep those fighting the battle in our thoughts and express our gratitude to those working on the front lines.

My name is Nicole Moscatelli, CHFP, and I am a Managing Consultant for BKD CPAs & Advisors and your NEPA HFMA Chapter President for the 2020-2021 year. I have worked in healthcare for more than 20 years. I recently joined BKD where I have the honor to work with community health centers across the country. I became a member of the NEPA Chapter of HFMA in 2007 at the encouragement and support of my then current employer. I credit my further involvement to Kelly Knorr for inviting me to join a committee during her president year. Becoming a member of the program committee opened many doors for me including attending the annual HFMA Leadership Training Conference and being mentored by so many amazing women leaders that served as chapter presidents before me. From there, my role continued to advance to a board member, through the officer track. I share this background for a few reasons. First, this organization has so much to offer any professional individual at any stage of their career and you don’t realize the benefits until you get involved. The personal connections are an added bonus that you will have with you forever. All it takes is an interest to move forward. Also, I share this with you so that you have insight into how I came to be in this role with the NEPA Chapter and why I have a strong passion for the work of the chapter and the HFMA.

Never did I imagine that I would be challenged with a pandemic during my president year. We face many challenges in our lives both personally and professionally, however, this one was unthinkable. It has completely changed the landscape of what a typical year looks like within our chapter with respect to education events, networking events, and leadership events, just to name a few. I am confident that we will persevere and be creative when it comes to providing valuable information and education to members and soon-to-be members as we collaborate across chapters within our Region. Change, as difficult as it may be, almost always provides for an opportunity to see and do things in a way you may otherwise not be able to perceive. This is a challenge that with the support of the current officers Brian Babilon, President Elect, Kelly Rygielski, Treasurer and Melissa Kern Balliet, Secretary along with a strong Board of Directors and Executive Council we will overcome and grow.

I encourage current members that are not active volunteers to get involved. I encourage soon-to-be members to join (what are you waiting for?) and volunteer. Reach out to any individual through our contact information here on our website to learn more…we want to hear from you! The feedback and input from everyone is what makes our chapter so successful and aids in our event planning to continue to provide the information in a manner that is best suited to attendees. One of the many lessons I have learned through this pandemic is to move a bit slower and take advantage of opportunities as they present themselves. HFMA, not only our chapter or region but across the nation is a close-knit group of individuals that work as a team to make a difference in the healthcare industry in many ways. I look forward to what the upcoming year will teach us, and I look forward to learning with all of you.

Sincerely,
Nicole Moscatelli, CHFP
2020-2021 President
